Mahindra Outsells BMW, Nissan and Mercedes-Benz in South Africa

January 15, 2026

South Africa’s new-vehicle market has recorded a strong resurgence, and one of the standout performers has been the Indian automotive brand Mahindra. According to official industry data from NAAMSA, Mahindra sold more vehicles in South Africa during 2025 than several long-established global brands, including BMW, Nissan and Mercedes-Benz.

The local automotive market delivered a landmark performance in 2025, recovering beyond pre-pandemic 2019 levels and reaching sales volumes not seen in more than a decade. This growth was supported by improving economic conditions, increased consumer confidence and a cumulative 150 basis-point reduction in interest rates since September 2024. Lower inflation and the arrival of more affordable vehicle options also contributed to renewed momentum in the market.

NAAMSA reported that total new-vehicle sales reached 48,983 units in December 2025, representing a year-on-year increase of 7,882 vehicles. Passenger car sales grew by 20.3 percent compared to the same period in the previous year, while light commercial vehicles posted an even stronger increase of 23.7 percent. Medium and heavy commercial vehicles recorded softer results, reflecting shifting demand patterns within the market.

While Toyota, Volkswagen and Suzuki continued to dominate the top of the sales charts, the broader rankings highlighted a notable shift. Alongside the rise of Chinese brands such as GWM and Chery, Mahindra has quietly and consistently strengthened its position in South Africa.

In December 2025 alone, Mahindra sold 1,234 vehicles, placing it 13th overall for the month. This figure surpassed Nissan, which sold 1,011 units, as well as BMW with 843 units and Stellantis, which includes brands such as Jeep and Opel, with 524 units sold. Mercedes-Benz, traditionally associated with the luxury segment, recorded an estimated 474 sales during the same period.

While Mahindra ranked 13th in December, its performance over the full year was even more impressive. When annual sales are considered, Mahindra finished on 18,100 vehicles, placing it within the top 10 best-selling automotive brands in South Africa for 2025. This consistency reflects growing trust in the brand and its relevance to local buyers.

Mahindra has been present in South Africa for over two decades, but its recent growth has been driven by a renewed focus on products that meet the needs of local consumers. The brand’s range of bakkies and compact SUVs has proven particularly popular, offering durability, value and practicality. This commitment to the local market was further reinforced by the opening of a R70 million vehicle assembly facility in Durban’s Dube TradePort Special Economic Zone, underscoring Mahindra’s long-term confidence in South Africa.
